American Idol 2008 – Maybe Idol should have let Beatles songs be
Maybe ‘Idol’ should have let Beatles songs be
For the first time since “American Idol” began six years ago, producers finally got their hands on John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s song catalog.
McCartney should have held out another six years (or more). For the most part, the remaining 12 “Idol” contestants’ performances of Fab Four hits was anything but fabulous.

Many of the contestants simply played it too safe. Beyond that, is the simple fact that there have been so few covers of any of this music because most people don’t want to hear anyone else but the Beatles doing them.
The best of the night: Chikezie Eze, who was in the bottom three last week, came back strong this week. He tackled “She’s a Woman,” a song released in 1964 as a B-side to “I Feel Fine.”
He told the audience in his pre-performance clip that he “hoped to put my own funk on it” and he succeeded. It began with a jug band-like arrangement before Eze seemed to channel the late James Brown and actually rocked out.
“I was thoroughly entertained. Who knew?” Randy Jackson said.
“I’m really surprised I actually agree with these two [Jackson and Paula Abdul],” an exasperated Simon Cowell said. “I thought you were terrific.”
David Cook also scored with his rock-fueled version of “Eleanor Rigby.”
“I’ve been telling people you’re the dark horse,” Abdul said. “We all know you’re the front man for your band, but you’re the front man here.”
Amanda Overmyer also rocked with the lesser-known “You Can’t Do That” (the B-side of “A Hard Day’s Night”)
“You took a Beatles song and took it to a southern bar and rocked it out,” Jackson said.
Hovering in the bottom: David Archuleta, assumed by many to be the front-runner, seemed to struggle with the lyrics of “We Can Work It Out.”
It was his worst performance to date, but given his fan base, he probably has nothing to worry about.
“This kind of vibe isn’t your kind of vibe,” Jackson said.
“That was a mess,” Cowell said. “At this point in the competition, I expect incredible performances and this was your worst performance so far.”
David Hernandez did a fairly cheesy version of “I Saw Her Standing There.”
“That was a corny version bordering on desperate,” Cowell quipped. “It just wasn’t cool.”
Kristy Lee Cook’s future should be cooked thanks to her country version of “Eight Days A Week.”
“I thought it was horrendous,” Cowell bluntly said. ” You sounded like Dolly Parton on helium.”
One contestant will be eliminated on the 8 p.m. results show on WFLD-Channel 32 tonight. Also revealed: which established artists will mentor the final 11 this season.
