American Idol Gives Back Ratings Drop: worse than last year’s special

Idol Gives Back did significantly worse than last year’s special. Fox’s Idol Gives Back dropped in the ratings, compared to its debut last season.

This news comes a day after a celebrity cast took the Idol stage. Such stars as Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, Fergie and the promise of an appearance from all three presidential candidates were not enough to build on the mega-success of last year’s show.

Idol Gives Back dropped 34% among adults 18-49. Although the two hour special was the highest rated show Wednesday night, it was the lowest rated episode of Idol since 2005’s American Idol’s Worst Auditions special. By comparison, Idol is only down 10% in the same demographic when compared to last year’s.

But there might be an explanation. Last year, Gives Back was also advertised as a normal Wednesday on the show, meaning that someone was going to be voted off of the show. Of course, in the spirit of the night, no one was voted off.

In this fashion of surprises on Gives Back night, the show opted to omit the videotaped appearance messages by Senators Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain until Thursday’s results show.
