News Agency: PARENTS fear their daughters look up to celebrities such as Paris Hilton or Britney Spears.
But women aged 18-25 are more likely to regard their mother as their most influential and positive role model.
Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission research found women of all ages overwhelmingly nominated their mothers and grandmothers as role models.
They were nominated for possessing such qualities as being hard-working, caring, balanced and inspiring.
Many of the women interviewed, aged 18-64 from across metropolitan and regional Victoria, said their mothers lived tough lives but still managed to pass on strong values and morals to their families.
Many admired their mums for having made sacrifices to ensure their children’s lives were better than their own, and appreciated their efforts even more since having children themselves.
But the study, to be released today to celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday and 100 years of Victorian women’s suffrage, found equality was still a long way off.
Despite advances for working women since sex discrimination was outlawed 30 years ago, this offence and sexual harassment continue to be the two most common complaints to the commission.
Prominent feminist Anne Summers said successful showbusiness women such as Kylie Minogue and Delta Goodrem were deserving role models because of their achievements.
But Dr Summers said that other celebrities were a far cry from powerful role models such as Australia’s first female Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.
“It’s a pity that slutty looks are all the rage,” she said.
“I hope this (trend) doesn’t last long.”
While younger women said they were told to be whatever they wanted, many described juggling work and children as hectic and stressful.
Physiotherapist Tanya Szylkrot, 24, and her sister Michelle, 21, who is studying teaching, have no doubt their mum Anne, a nurse, is their most important role model.
Tanya followed Anne’s career example because her mum enjoyed helping others.
“Mum always said if you can make one person feel better about themselves, it’s worth it, and I’ve always admired that about her,” she said.
Both valued Anne’s efforts to make her family’s health and education a priority.
