American Idol 2008 - Sounds like Horton is storming in

Sounds like `Horton’ is storming in
It’s impossible not to be aware that “Horton Hears a Who” opens today in nearly 4,000 theaters.

Jim Carrey, who voices the title character, showed up in costume Wednesday on Fox’s “American Idol” to give the animated flick from 20th Century Fox an in-person plug.

Carrey’s co-stars, Steve Carell and Carol Burnett, have also been making the publicity rounds in an effort to make this movie version of the Dr. Suess book the monster hit everyone expects it to be.

March has been a golden month for Fox in past years when it comes to animated flicks aimed at the whole family. It started back in 2002 with “Ice Age,” which stunned the industry with a $46.3 million opening-weekend gross and proved that March could be fertile ground for heavily marketed G-rated movies. Last year, “Ice Age: The Meltdown” did even better with a $68 million opening.

I think “Horton” is going to end up with a debut somewhere in the middle of the two “Ice Age” movies with a gross of $50 million to $55 million.

THE COMPETITION: Everything will get stomped by “Horton.” The sci-fi horror flick “Doomsday” debuted in just fewer than 2,000 theaters today, and it will be hard-pressed to make even the $5 million mark.

I have higher hopes - but only slightly higher - for the fighting flick “Never Back Down,” which will be seeking some of the same young male audience as “Doomsday.”

“Never” is set in the world of mixed martial arts and features

two-time Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (”Blood Diamond”) in a cast of mostly young actors with no box office track records. It might be able to debut in the area of $8million.

HOLDOVERS: Last weekend’s top movie, “10,000 B.C.,” has had decent midweek business, but it will most certainly slip to second place.

The Martin Lawrence comedy “College Road Trip” opened below expectations last weekend ($13.6million) and won’t be helped by “Horton” herding away audiences this weekend. It will be fighting for third place with newbies “Doomsday” and “Never.”
LIMITED RELEASE: The horror thriller “Funny Games” tip-toes into 289 theaters with its biggest selling point being Naomi Watts, who starred in “The Ring” and its sequel.

Bowing in even fewer locations is “Sleepwalking,” a drama starring Charlize Theron that the Oscar-winner also produced. Also in the film, booked into just 30 theaters, are Woody Harrelson and Dennis Hopper.
