American Idol Latest: Who dropt out in the Second Finalist Last Night
Yesterday, the top 11 remaining American Idol contestants continued their destruction of musical legend. The show decided that following the success of Lennon and McCartney night there should be a Beatles evening. Makes sense, as both George and Ringo had some great contributions. Hell, I’d love to see a contestant take on something like “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace).” That would be worth watching.
The problem I have with this whole debacle is admittedly personal. The judges constantly require the contestants change things up, and that is exactly what you should never do with a Beatles song. These are some of the most legendary musical arrangements because of what they are in the purest form. So while David Archuleta’s performance may have felt “safe” to some, it barely strayed from the original formula. And who told David #2 (nee David Cook) that covering a Whitesnake version of a Beatles song was a good idea? Leave the voicebox trickery to Ritchie Sambora and Peter Frampton dude.
I’m not here to bring Idol down, but it had to be said. I love the Beatles, and hearing some great songs performed on this show is a welcome change. But now that the milestone is reached, let’s just step back and let the Fab Four have a rest. It took less than a week for the Beatles distribution horse to be thoroughly beat. Speaking of beat…how about that medley performance tonight? I also have no idea what that means, or why I felt the need for such an awkward transition.
The show opens with details on how to enter the contest to write the final song on American Idol. You’ll have until March 31st to enter; we’ll have more details as they come in. The show starts off with another medley, and while it starts off lame and cheesy…wait, that’s about it. Way to rip open George’s heart and destroy one of the greatest songs in history. My guitar is weeping in misery and pain. Carly once again saves things, but not enough to make me care. And uh…hi Kristy Lee Cook!! Can’t wait to watch you walk off stage in less than an hour. After what she did last week to “8 Days a Week,” she deserves nothing less than ridicule and for her 15 minutes to end before the morning comes. I am also over Overmeyer. Hah! Puntastic.
Ryan takes us through the requisite recap of performances the previous night. Oh god…Sayesha murdered “Yesterday.” How in the world did Randy think that was a very good performance? OK, let’s just get rid of someone now. Ryan first brings up Brooke White, who Simon recently chose on Oprah as a front runner for this season. She’s in the top 10. As are David Archuleta and Michael Johns.
But Carly Smithson is in the bottom three. First huge shock of the season. And it also proves that if you’re going to do a Beatles song you’re better off playing a favorite, rather than one of the better composed and arranged songs in their set list. “Blackbird” is a fantastic song, and I doubt 80% of the tween Idol audience has ever heard a note of it.
After the break we see a video showing how the Ford commercials are made. Boy, I hope this is a special feature on the DVD release. This week they do “Should I Stay or Should I Go.” I have no words. None. Ryan does his hosting duty and reminds off the contest. We go back to the results with David Cook, who joins his buddy David in the top. Ryan then asks Kristy Lee Cook how she thinks she did, she thinks it went OK. Joy of Joys…she joins Carly in the bottom three. Jason Castro, who I’m sorry to say I am done with, remains on the show for another week. I love his voice, but the aw-shucks personality is wearing thin. Ramiele joins the top 10 crew.
For some reason a higher up on the production team thinks we care at all what the general populace wants to ask on the show. Which is just an excuse for Simon and Ryan to make jokes at each other’s expense. The Q&A session fills up time that would be better spent kicking off the next contestant, cutting the episode down to a half-hour and allowing me to go back to Top Chef. But then Simon says something like, “You’re actually a very good kisser,” to Paula. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. In case you were wondering, Ramiele last downloading R. Kelly’s “I’m a Flirt.” And then she peed on her iPod.
I thought Kellie Pickler was a dumbass with little talent? I guess someone thought different, and they gave her bigger boobs and another shot on Idol. Kellie then comes onstage to perform one of her songs. It’s forgettable, whiny and Dolly Parton wannabe in style.
Ryan moves to something a bit more worthwhile with details on the next Idol Gives Back. The results of what happened after last year were shown, and Fantasia is spotted at one point singing “Amazing Grace” while making a bed. Jokes aside, the whole Idol Gives Back thing is really a wonderful way to use the power of Idol’s brand for some good in the world. 8 million nets were distributed across Africa last year, which are vital to keep mosquitoes and malaria out of the homes of families throughout the continent.
Sayesha comes out and joins the top 10. Eh, I hated her “Yesterday” performance with a vitriolic passion. Chikezie and Amanda come out together, and Ryan immediately tells them that Chikezie is safe. So our bottom three is Carly, Kristy and Amanda. I can’t pick who should go home first, Kristy or Amanda. One thing is for sure, Carly has no place in the bottom three this week.
Here we go. Ryan brings the three ladies up on stage, and immediately tells Carly to sit down. She is, thankfully, safe. Simon says that America got things right again. Amanda Overmeyer leaves American Idol this week. So…did you guys get it right? What do you think of Amanda leaving? Are you also having trouble holding in all the joy? Join us next week when Kristy gets the boot.
