American Idol title: to be decided soon

American Idol Results Show: American Idol title to be decided soon?

Trying to figure out who is going to win “American Idol” this season has been a bit perplexing.

In seasons past I could usually narrow it down to the obvious three or four singers.

Season 7 is different.

With last week’s elimination of Mulberry, Ind. resident Amanda Overmyer , “American Idol” has settled on a Top 10 that could surprise viewers each week — from Tuesday’s episode (8 p.m. Fox) all the way to the May 21 finale.

The 17-year-old boy wonder David Archuleta seems like the crooner to beat, but he hasn’t won anything yet. What this means to viewers is that a rather sedate “Idol” season thus far is about to get a lot more interesting.

Here’s my take on where the singers stand heading into Tuesday’s performance episode.

David Archuleta: He has the purest singing voice among this year’s contestants, and a baby face that has the tween and grandma set screaming with every twinkle of his eye. What could hurt him is the pressure that’s mounting on the big stage. He hasn’t taken the big risk yet and there may be a reason for that. Can he win?: Yes. He just needs to sing one big unexpected song and nail it. Prediction: Will be in the final.

  • Jason Castro: His cover of “Hallelujah” a few weeks back is one of my favorites of the season. He hasn’t shown that he can top that performance yet. He might not be able to. Still, I’d buy his CD and that says a lot. Can he win?: Yes. It would be a bit of a surprise, but he’s in the mix. Prediction: No. 5.
  • Chikezie: Chikezie has stepped up his game since moving to the big stage, but he only excels with high energy songs that allow him to perform. Out of all the men left, he may be the weakest vocally so he’ll need that performance to keep him in it. Can he win?: Maybe. Not likely. Prediction: No. 7.
  • David Cook: This year’s rocker may be even better than the obvious comparison — Chris Daughtry. Getting the boot from “Idol” worked out pretty well for him and it should for Cook, too. “Idol” voters never seem to fully embrace the rocker in the crowd, which may be the best thing that could happen to Cook. Can he win?: No. He has the voice, but not the votes. Getting kicked off “Idol” will only help his street cred anyway. Prediction: No. 3.
  • Kristy Lee Cook: She can sing, but is way too boring to go much further. Simon Cowell described her as “musical wallpaper,” which seems to sum it all up. You may notice her but you won’t remember her later. Can she win?: No. Prediction: No. 8
  • Michael Johns: When Johns busted out Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” during Hollywood week I nearly fell off the couch. Now it seems I’m not the only one waiting for him to do something just as spectacular. Each week Cowell gets more and more frustrated that Johns hasn’t lived up to expectations. He needs to soon to stay in the mix. Can he win?: Yes. But he needs for find that breakout song even more than Archuleta. Prediction: No. 6.
  • Ramiele Malubay: She hasn’t impressed. Her time is running out. Can she win?: No. Prediction: No. 10.
  • Syesha Mercado: Ugh. Her version of “Yesterday” was so painfully slow that I’d swear the song was called “Today” when she started. Can she win?: No. Prediction: No. 9.

Carly Smithson: Smithson could win this thing. She should win this thing. Then she ends up in the bottom three last week. Her voice is spectacular. She’s a great performer, but she hasn’t shaken early press that she’s a ringer because of a brief childhood record deal. This is where the popularity contest comes in. Can she win?: Yes. But don’t count on it. Prediction: No. 4.

Brooke White: Although I like Brooke’s voice and stage presence her much praised performance of “Let It Be” wasn’t as good as it has been touted. Her piano playing and emotion helped, but her vocals were good, not great. Minus an instrument last week, her performance during “Here Comes the Sun” showed just how awkward she can be. Can she win?: Yes. Prediction: Will be in the final.

OK, I’ve shown you mine, now show me yours. Where do you think this year’s contestants will stand or fall?
