name the most influential female musician to emerge in the past 20 years.
There are some names that come to mind, notably Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls, Tori Amos and Bjork.
But Ani DiFranco has arguably exerted a greater influence than anyone else — perhaps male or female. Her percussive, polyrhythmic compositions have set the template for a generation of neo-folk musicians. Long before it was in vogue, DiFranco established her own label, Righteous Babe Records, which has just released “Canon,” a two-disc greatest hits package. She’s collaborated with Prince, Maceo Parker and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. She’s produced albums by Dan Bern and Janis Ian; Dave Matthews and Chuck D. have covered her songs.
