1. Northern Illinois University’s Cole Hall , where a gunman fatally shot five students before turning a gun on himself Feb. 14, will be demolished and replaced with a new state-of-the-art classroom building. It will be named Memorial Hall.

2. The Humane Society sued the government Wednesday over what it says is a legal loophole that allows so-called “downer” cows to get into the food supply. The USDA issued the largest beef recall in history Feb. 17 after the Humane Society released undercover video showing workers at Chino-based Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. shoving sick or crippled cows with forklifts to get them to stand.

3. A federal advisory panel is recommending that all children get flu shots . The panel voted Wednesday to expand annual flu shots to virtually all children except infants younger than 6 months and those with serious egg allergies. That means about 30 million more children could be getting vaccinated. If heeded, it would be one of the largest expansions in flu vaccination coverage in U.S. history.

4. An investigation into allegations the Marine Corps delayed sending blast-resistant trucks to Iraq also will examine whether the Marines were too slow to send a special laser that can divert drivers and people from checkpoints and convoys.

5. A jury in Ohio has spared a former police officer convicted of killing his pregnant girlfriend and their unborn daughter from the death penalty. Jurors recommended a sentence of life in prison with the chance of parole after 30 years for Bobby Cutts Jr.

6. Pamela Anderson is seeking to annul her two-month marriage to Rick Salomon based on fraud. No other details were available. Anderson and Salomon, both 40, were married Oct. 6 in Las Vegas and separated Dec. 13. He’s best known for making a sex videotape with then-girlfriend Paris Hilton and was previously married to actress Shannen Doherty.

7. Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs has pleaded not guilty to sex charges in Arizona stemming from arranged marriages between teen girls and older men.

8. Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch will be put up for public sale next month unless he pays the more than $24 million he still owes on the property.

9. A 16-foot python stalked a family dog for days before swallowing the pet whole in front of horrified children in the Australian tropics. The boy and girl, ages 5 and 7, watched as the scrub python devoured their silky terrier-Chihuahua crossbreed at their home near Kuranda in Queensland state.

10. University of Illinois Chancellor Richard Herman wants Champaign to shut down an annual day of student drinking known as Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day. The day, which this year will be Friday, was created by local bars to make up for money lost when St. Patrick’s Day falls during spring break.

    So what does this all mean? I think we really did accomplish our goals. We asked kids on Thursday what they would improve, and what we heard more than anything else (other than “Feed us!”) was that the institute was too short. They would have rather had longer days or more of them. If that’s the worst complaint they can come up with, I think we’re doing pretty well. But it’s also important to remember that, while this was a ton of planning and work, on some level, it’s still easier than September will be. …
